US module manufacturer Illuminate USA has signed a five-year deal with US panel recycling firm Solarcycle to acquire solar glass manufactured in the US.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Under the terms of deal, Solarcycle will supply Illuminate USA with 3GW of recycled solar glass per year, which will be used in the latter\u2019s manufacturing of solar modules at its 5GW manufacturing facility in Pataskala, Ohio, which began commercial operations last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Solarcycle is currently building a recycling plant in Cedartown, Georgia, which will have an annual output of 5GW of solar glass<\/a>, and support the company\u2019s existing module recycling efforts; in 2024, the company recycled over 480,000 individual panels, but did not specify the capacity of these modules. In last week\u2019s announcement of the Illuminate USA deal, Solarcycle described the Georgia facility as \u201cshovel ready\u201d and expects to begin production of solar glass in \u201cearly 2028\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis agreement is a meaningful signal to the market about the future of solar manufacturing in the US,\u201d said Suvi Sharma, Solarcycle CEO and co-founder. \u201cDespite some challenging policy headwinds, there is still significant market demand for high-quality, domestically manufactured materials that support US solar manufacturing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sharma\u2019s comments come as the Trump administration looks to incentivise domestic manufacturing of all manner of goods, including materials and components used in the clean energy transition. While many in the solar sector have raised questions about the ability of the US solar industry<\/a> to meet demand for solar products \u2013 particularly those involving polysilicon, of which 90% of global production is based in China \u2013 solar panel recycling and end-of-life care is a part of the supply chain that the US might be better-positioned to invest in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In May, Solarcycle signed a recycling agreement with German renewable energy company RWE Clean Energy<\/a>, and earlier this month produced a module made of recycled glass from decommissioned panels<\/a> with a performance in line with entirely new modules, which the company described as \u201ca critical step towards a closed-loop solar manufacturing process\u201d.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
