Image: Steven Woods (via Lodestone Energy\/LinkedIn).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite severe flooding in the Waiotahe Valley in New Zealand, Lodestone Energy has confirmed that its 42MW Te Herenga o Te R\u0101 solar PV power plant has continued operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pictures released by Lodestone Energy on LinkedIn showed the solar PV power plant, which came <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pv-tech.org\/lodestone-connects-new-zealands-first-solar-pv-plant-to-the-grid\/\">online on New Zealand\u2019s North Island in January 2025<\/a>, mostly submerged in water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The solar PV power plant and the wider community in the valley were struck at the end of July and early August by a weather phenomenon called an \u201catmospheric river.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An atmospheric river is a long, narrow band of concentrated water vapour in the atmosphere, resembling a river in how it transports moisture from one location to another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These weather events often bring widespread rainfall, increasing the chances of flooding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lodestone Energy said the solar PV plant, which it claimed was the country\u2019s first plant connected to the grid, had been designed to combat these extreme weather conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"550\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pv-tech.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/1754271946130-1024x550.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-158412\" style=\"width:559px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pv-tech.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/1754271946130-1024x550.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.pv-tech.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/1754271946130-300x161.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.pv-tech.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/1754271946130-768x412.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.pv-tech.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/1754271946130.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Image: Lodestone Energy (via LinkedIn).<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Indeed, despite being more costly than the average solar PV power plant, Lodestone Energy opted to raise the inverter stations and module connection boxes high above ground to ensure the plant could continue to operate in more than a meter of water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The developer also adopted a special piling design that is more than 4 meters deep and has extra-high solar PV tables.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Through these measures, the 42MW Te Herenga o Te R\u0101 solar PV power plant remained fully operational throughout the weather event. However, Lodestone Energy did note that its operations team decided, out of caution, to disconnect the plant from the grid when the rain had stopped and was assessing the plant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-lodestone-s-solar-pv-portfolio-in-new-zealand\"><strong>Lodestone\u2019s solar PV portfolio in New Zealand<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Lodestone\u2019s other operational solar PV power plants in New Zealand, the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pv-tech.org\/industry-updates\/trina-solar-powers-new-zealands-largest-solar-farm-with-integrated-module-tracker-solution\/\">33MW Kohir\u0101 in Kaitaia<\/a> and the 32MW Rangitaiki plant, also situated near the Bay of Plenty, are connected to local distribution networks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The company\u2019s fourth solar PV plant, a 32MW development currently under construction in Whitianga, will connect to the Powerco distribution network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Rangitaiki PV plant incorporates agrivoltaics by featuring raised modules mounted on trackers, allowing sheep to graze beneath them. The modules in question are Trina Solar Vertex bifacial modules mounted on TrinaTracker\u2019s Vanguard 2P tracker systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Auckland-based company is also developing&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pv-tech.org\/lodestone-energy-build-220mw-agripv-project-new-zealand\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a 220MW agrivoltaics plant on New Zealand\u2019s South
